THE WRITING & EMAIL STACK / 2 JOBS
Write it.
Send it.
A small stack for creators and solo businesses who want to turn ideas into a regular newsletter. It covers one tool to help you draft and one to publish and grow your list. You may need only one of them.

The short answer
For drafting, start with one general AI assistant such as ChatGPT or Claude. Both have free plans, and paid plans cost about US$20 a month. If you mainly want quick short-form copy on a small budget, our budget pick is Rytr: it has a free plan, and its Unlimited plan was listed at US$9/month (or US$7.50/month billed yearly) when we checked. Larger marketing teams that need brand voice managed across a lot of copy may look at a platform such as Jasper instead. For sending, our newsletter pick is beehiiv. Its free Launch plan covers up to 2,500 subscribers with unlimited sends, based on beehiiv's published plans. If you want to earn from your newsletter through ads, paid subscriptions or a referral program, you'll need its paid Scale plan. If your business runs on automated email sequences that sell products, Kit is a fair alternative.
The job: from idea to inbox
You have something useful to say, and you want to say it regularly to people who asked to hear from you. That means two separate jobs. The first is turning ideas into clear drafts. The second is delivering them by collecting subscribers, sending the newsletter and, eventually, earning from it.
Neither tool replaces your judgment. A writing assistant can speed up an outline, but it can't give you a point of view. Email software gives you a list, but it won't give you a reason for people to open the next issue. If you already write comfortably, skip the first job. If you don't have an audience yet, start publishing somewhere free before you pay for anything.
| Job | Options | Best fit | When to skip it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Draft and edit | ChatGPT or Claude (general) · Rytr (budget AI writer) | Outlines, first drafts, editing passes | Your writing process already works |
| Send and grow | beehiiv (our pick) · Kit (alternative) | A regular newsletter you want to grow or monetise | You can't commit to sending regularly yet |
01 / WRITING, OPTION A
A general AI assistant: ChatGPT or Claude
Best for: Solo creators who want help brainstorming angles, outlining an issue, tightening a draft or suggesting subject lines, without paying for a specialist tool.
Why it's on the shortlist
One general assistant can support the whole writing process: research notes, outlines, rough drafts and editing passes. It can also help with non-writing tasks, so one subscription covers more of your business. ChatGPT and Claude are alternatives here. We don't think either is universally better, so try the same real newsletter task in both and keep the one whose output you edit least.
Meaningful drawbacks
Both can produce confident but inaccurate claims, and prose that sounds generic. Check every fact and link against the original source, and rewrite until it sounds like you. A general assistant also doesn't manage your brand voice across a team the way a dedicated marketing platform aims to. Usage limits apply on free and paid plans.
Pricing (checked 28 September 2026)
ChatGPT: A free plan is available. ChatGPT Plus costs US$20/month, billed monthly, according to OpenAI's Help Center, which also says annual billing isn't currently offered for Plus. OpenAI's pricing page also lists Go and Pro plans. Their prices didn't display when we checked, so see the official ChatGPT pricing page for current figures.
Claude: A free plan is available. Claude Pro costs US$20/month billed monthly, or US$17/month with annual billing (US$200 billed up front). Max starts from US$100/month. See official Claude pricing.
Prices shown in USD. Regional pricing, taxes and plan features can change, so check the provider before purchasing.
When to skip it
Skip it if you already draft quickly and your bottleneck is consistency or distribution, not words. Don't pay for both ChatGPT and Claude unless each regularly handles a different job. The free plans are a sensible place to find out whether AI help suits your writing at all.
01 / WRITING, BUDGET PICK
A budget AI writer: Rytr
Best for: Solo creators on a tight budget who mostly need short pieces of copy, such as email drafts, subject-line ideas, social captions, calls to action and short paragraphs, and who want a low-cost, writing-focused tool rather than a general assistant.
Why it's on the shortlist
Rytr is built around writing tasks rather than open-ended conversation. Based on its published pricing and product pages, it offers ready-made use cases (including email, paragraph content, post and caption ideas, and calls to action), 20+ preset tones of voice, a Chrome extension and built-in plagiarism checks on paid plans. Its Unlimited plan costs less than half the US$20/month of ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro, which is the main reason it earns the budget slot. Unlimited lists 1 Tone of Voice Match; Premium lists multiple, and Rytr aims it at freelancers creating content for multiple brands.
Meaningful drawbacks
It's a narrower tool than ChatGPT or Claude. It's designed for writing, so it won't also cover research, planning or analysis the way a general assistant can. Like any AI writer, it can produce generic or inaccurate text, so check facts and rewrite in your own voice. The free plan is capped at 10,000 characters a month, and the Unlimited plan is limited to one language and one Tone of Voice Match. Yearly billing comes with a 12-month commitment, according to Rytr. Prices are set in USD, with any currency conversion applied at checkout by its payment provider.
Pricing (checked 28 September 2026)
| Plan | Billed monthly | Billed yearly | Key limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | US$0 | US$0 | 10K characters per month, no credit card required, 1 language |
| Unlimited | US$9/month | US$7.50/month | Unlimited generations, 1 Tone of Voice Match, 50 plagiarism checks per month, 1 language |
| Premium | US$29/month | US$24.16/month | Unlimited generations, multiple Tone of Voice Matches, 100 plagiarism checks per month, 35+ languages, priority support |
Rytr's pricing page describes yearly billing as "get 2 months free", and its FAQ says the annual plan comes with a 12-month commitment. Monthly plans can be cancelled at any time. Source: Rytr pricing, checked 28 September 2026.

When to skip it
Skip it if you already pay for ChatGPT or Claude: a general assistant can handle the same short-form drafting, so a second subscription is hard to justify. Skip it too if you write long, opinion-led issues in your own voice and mainly need an editor, or if you need one tool for research and planning as well as writing. If you're a team producing a high volume of on-brand marketing copy, a more expensive marketing platform such as Jasper, which builds in shared brand voices and team workflows, may suit you better. Start on the free plan to see whether its output saves you editing time before paying.
02 / EMAIL & NEWSLETTER, OUR PICK
beehiiv
Best for: Newsletter-first creators who want to grow a list and earn from it through sponsorships, paid subscriptions or referrals, with the growth and monetisation tools in one platform.
Why it made the shortlist
beehiiv is built around the newsletter itself. Based on beehiiv's published plans, the free Launch plan includes newsletters, a website, podcast tools, unlimited email sends, custom domains and campaign analytics for up to 2,500 subscribers. The paid Scale plan adds most of what a growing newsletter might need:
- Ad Network: beehiiv says it's available on Scale and above for publications actively sending on beehiiv. You choose which ad offers to run, and payouts are based on CPM or CPC. Estimated payouts aren't guaranteed.
- Paid subscriptions: beehiiv states it takes 0% of your paid subscription revenue. Stripe's processing fee still applies, which beehiiv quotes as 2.9% + US$0.30 per transaction.
- Referral program: Reward readers who refer new subscribers, with milestones and rewards you set. This is listed as a Scale feature, not a Launch one.
- Email automations, A/B testing, surveys and polls, plus paid Recommendations and digital products.
Meaningful drawbacks
The free plan is capped at 2,500 subscribers, and it doesn't include the Ad Network, paid subscriptions, the referral program or automations. Most of the reasons to choose beehiiv need a paid plan. Its pricing page marks the Ad Network and paid Recommendations as "not available in all regions" without listing which ones, so if you're outside the US, confirm before relying on ad income. Removing beehiiv branding, dynamic content and click-triggered automations are Max-only features. Kit's free plan has a higher subscriber cap (see below).
Pricing (checked 28 September 2026)
| Plan | Billed monthly | Billed annually | Key additions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Launch | US$0 | US$0 | Up to 2,500 subscribers, unlimited sends, website, custom domains, 1 team member |
| Scale | US$49/month | US$43/month (US$517/year) | Ad Network, paid subscriptions, referral program, automations, up to 3 team members |
| Max | US$109/month | US$96/month (US$1,151/year) | Remove beehiiv branding, up to 10 publications, unlimited seats, priority support |
| Enterprise | Custom pricing | 100K+ subscribers, dedicated account manager | |
Paid prices rise with your subscriber count. We've shown the 1,000-subscriber tier displayed on the pricing page, so use beehiiv's subscriber selector to see the price for your list size. Scale and Max offer a free trial, but some features, including the Ad Network, are excluded from it. See beehiiv's current plans.
Prices shown in USD. Plans, features and regional availability can change, so check the provider before purchasing.
When to skip it
Skip beehiiv if your email is mainly a sales engine, with automated sequences, product funnels and tagging-based journeys. An automation-focused platform may suit you better. Also skip it if you expect more than 2,500 subscribers soon, don't plan to monetise, and want to stay on a free plan. And if you're not ready to send on a regular schedule, build that habit first.
Considering Kit instead?
Kit is a strong alternative, and it's the email pick in our one-person online business stack. Based on Kit's published plans, its free plan covers up to 10,000 subscribers, with unlimited landing pages, forms and broadcasts, and the ability to sell digital products and subscriptions. Paid plans start with Creator at US$33/month billed yearly (US$390/year) and Pro at US$66/month billed yearly (US$790/year) for 1,000 subscribers. Creator adds unlimited visual automations and email sequences. Kit lists a transaction fee of 3.5% + 30c on digital product and subscription sales, inclusive of card processing.
Choose Kit if you sell courses, coaching or digital products and rely on automated sequences. Choose beehiiv if the newsletter is the product, and you want built-in ads, referrals and 0% platform take on paid subscriptions. See official Kit pricing. We don't earn a commission from Kit.
A simple weekly workflow
- Pick one reader question. Write the answer in a sentence before you open any tool.
- Outline with your assistant. Give ChatGPT, Claude or Rytr your notes, sources and audience, and ask for a structure and counter-arguments, not a finished issue.
- Draft and edit yourself. Check every factual claim against the original source. Remove anything you couldn't defend.
- Send from your newsletter platform. Write a clear subject line, preview on mobile, and send on a consistent schedule.
- Grow deliberately. Once sending is routine, look at referrals, recommendations or sponsorships. Don't do it before then.
This is a suggested process, not a claim that these tools connect automatically.

Common questions
Is beehiiv free?
Yes. beehiiv's Launch plan is free, with no credit card required, for up to 2,500 subscribers and unlimited email sends. Monetisation tools such as the Ad Network, paid subscriptions and the referral program need the Scale plan or above, which was listed at US$49/month (or US$43/month billed annually) for 1,000 subscribers when we checked on 28 September 2026.
Should I choose beehiiv or Kit?
Choose beehiiv if the newsletter is your main product and you want built-in growth and ad monetisation. Choose Kit if you sell products and depend on automated email sequences, or if you want a free plan that covers up to 10,000 subscribers.
Do I need a dedicated AI writer, or is ChatGPT or Claude enough?
For most solo newsletters, one AI tool is enough. Choose a general assistant if you also want help with research and planning. Choose Rytr if you mainly want low-cost, short-form drafting: its Unlimited plan was listed at US$9/month, or US$7.50/month billed yearly, when we checked on 28 September 2026. Teams producing a high volume of on-brand marketing copy may prefer a pricier platform such as Jasper.
Is Rytr free?
Rytr has a free plan with no credit card required, capped at 10,000 characters of AI content a month. Paid plans remove that cap: Unlimited was US$9/month (US$7.50/month billed yearly) and Premium US$29/month (US$24.16/month billed yearly), according to rytr.me/pricing on 28 September 2026. Yearly plans come with a 12-month commitment.
